Humanities Decanted: Jeffrey Hoelle

Cultivated: Plants, Hair, and the Aesthetic of Control

UCSB's Interdisciplinary Humanities Center hosts a conversation between anthropologist Jeffrey Hoelle and environmental studies professor David Pellow about Hoelle's new book, Cultivated: Plants, Hair, and the Aesthetic of Control. The book follows a single idea of tidy, managed growth from cattle pastures and crop fields at the edge of the Amazon to lawns, cemeteries and the hair salons of Brazil's frontier cities, and asks what that habit of control means for the environment and for inequality.

Hoelle is a UCSB anthropology professor and author of Rainforest Cowboys. Refreshments are served.
